Time to Get Organized: How to Pack for Your Next Travel Assignment

Traveling on a contingency staffing assignment may be stressful. Unless you’re a seasoned traveler, it is easy to over or under pack. Let’s face it, you’re likely going to be gone for up to three months, living in an apartment or a house somewhere in limbo between traveling and a permanent resident. In your excitement to start your new position, it’s easy to overlook the necessities.

Before you start packing, talk with us so we can help you determine what your new housing will provide. Once you have an idea of what’s included, be sure to check the weather at your destination. If you’re traveling through two seasons, you’ll want to pack layers of clothing so you can add or peel off as the temperature changes.

Make a List and Check it Twice

Santa isn’t the only one who needs to be sure what’s on the list is accurate. Start by making an all-inclusive list of things you believe you’re going to need, and then think about what you can remove. Bringing a large load of goodies only makes moving more difficult. How much you bring may also be limited by how you’re traveling. If you’re flying to your destination, the airlines will limit what you can bring with you. But, if you’re traveling by car, it’s easy to think you can stuff the trunk and back seat with everything you want. Ignore that temptation!

On your list include a first aid kit and all of your prescription medications. It’s no fun being in a city by yourself, getting sick, and then having to run to the store for a thermometer or medication to bring down a fever. Another vital category is your electronics. Be sure you bring chargers for everything on your list, such as your phone, tablet, Bluetooth headsets and laptop.

As you’re packing your toiletries, think about how much you would pack if you were going on a vacation for a week and pack that much. Everything else can be purchased once you arrive. Incidentals you’ll want to consider are an umbrella, compact travel iron and lint brush. Don’t forget casual clothes and sportswear since you will have time off to explore your new city. Depending on your lifestyle, you may also want to bring formal evening wear.

Have a Designated Helper at Home

No matter how often you travel, you may forget to bring something essential. A friend or relative at home with a key to your house can be a lifesaver!

Remember to keep a list of emergency phone numbers in your wallet or on your phone that includes the name and phone number of your designated helper at home, primary care physician, dentist, insurance agent, emergency contact and recruiter.

Once you think you have everything under control, remember to check it twice! Now you have a list you can use for all upcoming travel assignments. The only things that should change are household items that may or may not be included in your living assignment.
